Research shows that our mental health is closely connected to our body and nervous system and often associated with fight, flight, or anxiety reactions as well as sometimes getting stuck in states such as withdrawal, shutting down, numbness, dissociation or depression.

Chronic mind and body tension is often related to patterns we developed when young. Lack of emotional intimacy as well as abuse and neglect can cause us to suffer complex trauma and get stuck in feelings of resentment, helplessness or hopelessness. We may have to repress our feelings and may seek escape in addictive and avoidant behaviours such as alcohol and drugs, busyness, workaholism and social isolation.

In a confidential, emotionally secure, safe space we can learn to recognise and feel our feelings. We can begin to let go of chronic tensions, achieve relaxation and gain mindful awareness to let go of unhelpful beliefs, self criticism, guilt, shame and fear. With support and practice we can learn to change our mind and body patterns.

HOW SOMATIC AND EMOTIONAL FOCUS THERAPY WORKS:

Feeling comfortable, relaxed, listened to and respected is the first goal and essential to success.*

1. Work out and set your goals eg reduce anxiety, depression, addiction, conflict
2. Learn to be aware of, calm and regulate your physical body, your emotional self and your nervous system.
3. Recognise current trigger situations when you over react, shut down or seek escape eg drugs and alcohol
4. Unpack your childhood history including family dynamics, level or lack of intimacy, emotional intelligence and school experience
5. Begin to recognise how current dysfunctional patterns in thinking, behaviour and feeling may be related to past experiences
6. Learn to calm your nervous system and practise new more functional responses in thinking, communicating and behaving.
